About the role
- Serve as the sole paid staff person and report to the Steering Committee, covering administrative and program functions
- Build and implement grant making strategy: review and track grant applications and reports in Foundant; share proposals with Allocations Committee and facilitate recommendations; develop grant making framework grounded in trust and community power; develop evaluation plan to measure impact
- Lead fundraising and donor organizing: partner with Steering Committee to develop and implement fundraising strategy spanning individual, corporate, and institutional giving; cultivate current and prospective funders; develop proposals, presentations, and communications; expand connections with regional and national funders and donor collaboratives
- Manage Steering Committee operations and governance: schedule and prepare agendas, facilitate meetings, present performance and financial reports, support creation and sustainment of effective governance structure
- External relations and thought leadership: serve as primary external representative; develop materials to help funders understand community organizing; organize convenings, funder briefings, and learning opportunities with grantees and funders
- General operations and financial management: manage day-to-day operations; draft, manage, and monitor annual budget in consultation with Crossroads Fund accountant; ensure timely financial and grant data to committees; manage contractors/consultants; ensure justice, equity, and collective liberation guide activities
Requirements
- Community organizing experience
- Bold analysis of philanthropy’s role in the movement landscape
- At least 10 years of professional experience in the nonprofit sector, specifically with Chicago-area movement organizations
- At least five years in leadership roles
- Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing fundraising strategies with clear and measurable goals; experience across foundation, corporate, and individual giving is a plus
- Understanding of institutional philanthropy and how to mobilize resources in the sector (traditional foundation experience is not required)
- Budget and financial management experience
- Strong project management, organization, and planning skills; ability to prioritize and work independently and collaboratively
- Experience building strong, meaningful relationships across a variety of stakeholders and gaining alignment to create action
- Strong facilitation skills with experience leading or participating in advisory boards, taskforces, or collaboratives with committees
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills across diverse audiences
- Strong computer and office software, application, and data management skills (Microsoft Office, Google Office Suite, cloud-based storage, and other tools)
