About the role

  • Serve as trusted advisors and fractional Controllers for small- to mid-sized business clients
  • Lead client relationships, aligning financial services with client goals for growth, profitability, and compliance
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted advisor for clients, leading financial review calls
  • Act as the escalation point for all client accounting matters and provide guidance on accounting decisions
  • Provide proactive insight, identifying risks, opportunities, and compliance considerations to support client growth
  • Monitor client profitability and engagement performance, recommending value-added services and resources
  • Partner cross-departmentally to ensure client needs are met with professionalism and timeliness
  • Lead, coach, and develop Senior and Staff Accountants, set expectations, provide feedback, and conduct performance reviews
  • Assign and oversee work to balance efficiency, accuracy, and growth opportunities; support recruiting, hiring, and onboarding
  • Identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency while maintaining compliance
  • Lead training, develop resources, and contribute to firm-wide knowledge; advance internal initiatives supporting strategic goals
  • Stay informed on industry trends and bring insights to leadership for continued growth and innovation

Requirements

  • MUST RESIDE IN EASTERN OR CENTRAL TIME ZONE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business
  • 6–8 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
  • Strong Controller-level expertise, including explaining financial statements, interpreting KPIs and understanding forecasts and budgets
  • Expertise in financial close processes and best practices
  • Proficiency with accounting and business platforms (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Fathom, Shopify, Cin7, Amazon)
  • Experience advising small businesses in industries such as inventory-based retail/e-commerce, creative/project-based companies, or technology startups
  • Familiarity with accounting and tax methodology, as well as small business economic trends
  • Demonstrated ability to manage utilization, staffing, and profitability
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills
  • Track record of delivering exceptional client service and strategic guidance to small businesses and startups
  • Motivated and trustworthy self-starter with strong communication and technological skills
  • Comfortable with new technologies and proactive in identifying opportunities for improvement
