About the role

  • Identify, develop, and maintain partnerships with strategic stakeholders, community, and professional partners, and various community-based organizations throughout West Virginia and the Appalachian region
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to build capacity to address cancer burden; assist with community needs assessments, attend and coordinate community meetings, and provide bidirectional communication
  • Conduct, in partnership, at least two monthly community focused cancer control activities in the assigned region
  • Design, develop, and implement community outreach and engagement plans for the assigned region, including dissemination of public/patient educational materials, outreach and promotion materials, and communication campaigns
  • Coordinate and facilitate internal and external programmatic meetings: develop agendas, facilitate meetings, record meeting minutes, disseminate meeting minutes and action items, and monitor progress on action items and deliverables
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of culturally appropriate, evidence-based programs, content, and services; provide technical assistance and expertise in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and applied research
  • Foster bidirectional research between WVUCI and the community and assist with implementation or recruitment of research projects in the community
  • Document program progress and submit monthly reports, assess strengths/weaknesses, and develop and implement strategies to improve outcomes and deliverables
  • Develop and disseminate cancer information and resources such as handouts, flyers, presentations, internal and external communications, videos, photographs, posters, infographics, social media, and websites
  • Assist with applications for additional funding opportunities for CPC projects and provide data to support development of documentation as required
  • Participate in implementation of the mission, vision, and strategic plan for the WVU Cancer Institute and Department of Cancer Prevention and Control
  • Develop and deliver presentations on cancer prevention, cancer screening, health literacy, and cultural competency
  • Serve on local and statewide coalitions and taskforces and submit or assist with submission of articles, abstracts, and posters to promote programmatic work, research, and outreach of CPC
  • Function as a member of the CPC staff: participate in regular team meetings, training sessions, program meetings, conferences, and training seminars; complete required WVU training and certifications
  • Collaborate with other CPC staff and programs to extend the reach of CPC and assist with other CPC program activities as requested by leadership
  • Support assigned counties: Berkeley, Grant, Jefferson, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, Morgan, Pendleton, Preston, Tucker (West Virginia) and Garrett County, MD; frequently travel throughout the state and occasionally stay overnight

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate discipline: public health, health communications, social work, social sciences, nursing, health education, healthcare administration, marketing, or other healthcare professions degree
  • Master's degree is preferred
  • A minimum of two (2) years of combined experience in: Coordinating health education programs; Community event planning; Group dynamics, leadership; Program assessment; Data collection; and project management
  • An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management, organization, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to establish priorities, adhere to deadlines, have high attention to detail and follow through, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Skilled at writing correspondence and preparing reports
  • Ability to operate the necessary computer, software (Microsoft Office), web-based and other high-tech equipment relative to the program
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary team environment and to coordinate participation of team members from various backgrounds
  • Skilled in group facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to manage health education programs, event planning, group dynamics, leadership, program assessment, evaluation, and practice facilitation
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with a significant degree of independence
  • Ability to travel frequently with occasional overnight stays, working outside the traditional work week as needed
  • Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards
  • Willingness to seek consultation and supervision as needed
  • Knowledge of current health issues, health education and behavioral theories, and health information needs of the medically underserved preferred
  • Ability to interact sensitively, effectively, and professionally with persons from various cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, including persons of all ages and orientations
  • Ability to rapidly learn institution, federal, and state statutes and regulations impacting the work
  • Preferred: Experience with community outreach and education, public communication, evaluation, community event planning, program assessment, and research preferred
  • Preferred: CITI Certification preferred
