About the role

  • Manage the off-take from WM Renewable Energy’s power fleet, maximizing revenues for energy, capacity, and renewable energy credits (RECs)
  • Commercial management of WMRE’s portfolio of power assets
  • Work with WMRE senior management to establish strategy and direct resources
  • Develop strong relationships internally with key WM stakeholders and WMRE Operations teams
  • Execute agreed-upon sales and hedging strategies and manage risk around WMRE’s power portfolio
  • Lead and grow a small team of power employees (3-4)
  • Work closely with WM and WMRE functions in plant operations, compliance, and regulatory to establish, manage and monetize inventory available for sale
  • Market RECs, capacity, and electricity
  • Use and oversee energy transaction platforms (Nymex, ICE, Nodal, OTC)
  • Manage/Supervise Day Ahead & Real Time activities at various ISOs
  • Negotiate Power Purchase Agreements
  • Manage EMA service provider(s)
  • Complete implementation and roll out of ICE and NODAL platforms
  • Manage WM Renewable Energy’s REC book
  • Implement and optimize the power hedging strategy for WMRE’s merchant fleet
  • Seek opportunities to bid new and existing capacity into utility RFPs
  • Work proactively with WM Procurement to lower power costs for the RNG fleet
  • Monitor and respond to ISO/PUC regulatory requests

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • At least 10 years related experience and/or training
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred: Master’s degree and 10 years of related experience
  • Experience in waste or energy related industry
  • Experience in the marketing of RECs, Capacity and Electricity
  • Experience with energy transaction I.T. systems and platforms like Nymex, ICE, Nodal and Over-the-Counter transactions
  • Ability to manage Day Ahead & Real Time activities at various ISOs
  • Ability to negotiate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
  • Experience managing EMA service providers
  • Experience implementing ICE and NODAL platforms
  • Experience managing a Renewable Energy Credit (REC) book
  • Experience implementing and optimizing power hedging strategies
  • Experience bidding new and existing capacity into utility RFPs
  • Experience working with procurement to lower power costs
  • Ability to monitor and respond to ISO/PUC regulatory requests
  • Supervisory experience managing 1-5 full-time employees (leading a small team of 3-4 Power employees)
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to present information to top management, public groups, and boards of directors
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
