About the role
- Determine acceptability of insurance risks and appropriate premium rates for large and complex group cases
- Act as the most senior technical underwriting expert for group cases
- Calculate renewal rates for large complex cases based on analysis of experience, location, demographics, etc.
- Provide guidance to medical underwriters concerning risk selection for individual health coverage applicants
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure accuracy and consistency of overall account reporting
- Propose rates for prospective business using other carrier experience, demographic data and manual rates
- Perform post-sale reviews
- Prepare or supervise preparation of annual settlements, ERISA reports, rate projections, and benefit change increments/decrements
- Survey existing product portfolios by market; monitor sales results, trends and needs; recommend product portfolio changes
- Assist in establishing rating and administrative procedures
- Participate in major multi-functional teams as an underwriting representative
- Assist in the technical development of underwriting associates and recommend productivity and efficiency improvements
- Update and monitor departmental processes and procedures in compliance with system, regulatory and business requirements
Requirements
- BA/BS in a related field (required) or any combination of education and experience providing equivalent background
- Minimum 7 years of related experience
- Medical insurance underwriting experience strongly preferred
- Intermediate Microsoft Excel experience including advanced proficiency in formulas, PivotTables, VLOOKUPs, and macros (strongly preferred)
- CPCU, CLU, LOMA, HIAA or other insurance related courses preferred
- Associates required to be in-office 1 - 2 days per week; alternate locations considered if within commuting distance
