About the role
- Design of deliverables associated with substation design projects supporting electric utility clients
- Physical design: yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, bills of material
- Protection and control design: one-line & three-line diagrams, AC & DC elementary & logic diagrams, panel elevations and wiring, supervisory & control drawings, vendor equipment wiring diagrams, cable schedule and bill of materials
- Report directly to the Substation Engineering Manager
- Attend project site visits to develop scope of work and define project objectives
- Prepare engineering cost estimate and man-hour estimates and schedules
- Develop top level documents for Electrical Physical and Protection & Control packages
- Provide guidance to junior engineers and/or designers
- Perform calculations for grounding & lightning, and AC/DC load studies
- Prepare equipment specifications for procurement of major equipment
- Perform quality control reviews of design calculations and drawings
- Provide short term field support during construction
- Coordinate design activities with other disciplines
- Serve as technical advisor for the team
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university
- 8+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm
- Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required
- Experience leading a team of engineers and designers designing substation projects (preferred)
- Experience with designing substations (preferred)
