About the role

  • Design of deliverables associated with substation design projects supporting electric utility clients
  • Physical design: yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, bills of material
  • Protection and control design: one-line & three-line diagrams, AC & DC elementary & logic diagrams, panel elevations and wiring, supervisory & control drawings, vendor equipment wiring diagrams, cable schedule and bill of materials
  • Report directly to the Substation Engineering Manager
  • Attend project site visits to develop scope of work and define project objectives
  • Prepare engineering cost estimate and man-hour estimates and schedules
  • Develop top level documents for Electrical Physical and Protection & Control packages
  • Provide guidance to junior engineers and/or designers
  • Perform calculations for grounding & lightning, and AC/DC load studies
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement of major equipment
  • Perform quality control reviews of design calculations and drawings
  • Provide short term field support during construction
  • Coordinate design activities with other disciplines
  • Serve as technical advisor for the team

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university
  • 8+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required
  • Experience leading a team of engineers and designers designing substation projects (preferred)
  • Experience with designing substations (preferred)
