About the role
- Performing entry level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.
- Apply theoretical concepts to solve defined problems and perform analyses under the guidance of senior engineers; assist in specific segments of more complex issues.
- Develop familiarity with essential equipment, materials, systems, and business processes; maintain acceptable solution quality in support of Real-time system reliability.
- Provide engineering support of the Reliability applications, processes, and the associated data and solution integrity.
- Support Transmission and/or Distribution State Estimator functionality and other reliability tools used in Transmission System Operations.
- Troubleshoot and analyze EMS & DMS powerflow solutions and work with various other applications used in daily reliability and operations of the electric grid.
- Oversee modeling responsibilities for an assigned area in accordance with AEP’s capital and O&M work plan.
- Coordinate routine engineering tasks, contribute to project planning, prepare cost estimates, monitor project status, and suggest actions under senior staff oversight.
- Participate in 24x7 On-Call support staff rotation to provide non-stop support to the System Control Center.
Requirements
- A degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
- Preferably a degree in Electrical Engineering with Power System background/study.
- Experience in Energy Management Systems, Distribution Management Systems, system reliability & grid operations, planning and modeling is a plus.
- Experience with Python, C++ and scripting languages is preferred.

- Education and Experience (Engineer Associate - grade 5): entry level for new graduates with a bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET.
- Education and Experience (Engineer - grade 6): typically 2 or more years of related engineering experience with a bachelor's degree accredited by ABET.
- Education and Experience (Engineer - grade 7): typically 4 or more years of related engineering experience with a bachelor's degree accredited by ABET; or 2 years of related engineering experience with a master’s degree accredited by ABET.
- Education and Experience (Engineer Sr- grade 8): typically 6 or more years of related engineering experience with a bachelor's degree accredited by ABET; or 4 years of related engineering experience with a master's degree or PhD accredited by ABET.
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.
