About the role
- Provide expert support to ensure high‑quality analytical results for nuclear fuel products, intermediates, residue recovery, material characterisation and wider growth projects.
- Manage the department's Quality Management System (QMS).
- Ensure alignment with internal and external quality policies and maintain compliance with ISO 17025, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and NQA1 standards.
- Act as the main point of contact for auditors, assessors and UKAS representatives.
- Manage, implement and maintain a fit‑for‑purpose Quality Management System aligned with customer, site and industry standards.
- Maintain quality documentation, including procedures, work instructions and the Management System Manual.
- Ensure continued ISO 17025 accreditation and compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and NQA1 requirements.
- Support regulatory, customer and third‑party audits.
- Be the primary contact for UKAS accreditation activities.
- Plan, conduct and report on internal audits, ensuring audit schedules are completed on time.
- Lead and support accreditation and certification assessments.
- Provide training for staff involved in quality‑related activities, including audit skills and root‑cause investigation.
- Track, analyse and present quality performance metrics to senior management.
- Promote a strong culture of quality, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Identify issues, risks or weaknesses and drive corrective and preventive actions.
- Host external audits, inspections and site visits.
- Act as an intelligent customer, ensuring quality considerations are fully represented in cross‑functional work.
- Support wider business projects by applying quality expertise where required.
- Manage leave, performance and sickness absence for direct reports.
Requirements
- Degree (minimum 2:2) in a scientific or quality discipline
- At least 2 years' experience on an operating site, or 5–10 years' experience in a quality management role.
- Working knowledge of quality management principles and systems.
- Experience maintaining or auditing quality systems to ISO 17025, ISO 9001 or ISO 14001.
- Understanding of Health and Safety requirements.
- Externally certified auditor status (desirable).
- Experience with analytical quality control in chemical laboratories (desirable).
- Experience in the nuclear or chemical industry (desirable).
- Understanding of uranium conversion processes or links between analytical quality and safety cases (desirable).
- Knowledge of NQA1 requirements (desirable).
- Familiarity with corrective action systems (desirable).
