About the role
- Gather, verify, and utilize information regarding wildfires
- Monitor various sources including scanner traffic, fire cameras, user-submitted intel, official messages from agencies, and automated bot detections provided by Watch Duty
- Collaborate and verify with other reporters to formulate alerts
- Send out verified alerts to the public (reaching millions of people)
- Work overnight shifts specifically as a volunteer reporter
- Communicate and coordinate in real-time via Slack to support rapid incident verification and dissemination
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- A community spirit and the desire to help others in times of need
- Experience monitoring or listening to emergency communications
- Ability to work in a team and collaborate in real-time on Slack (our internal messaging platform)
- The ability to multitask while dealing with high-pressure situations
- A professional approach to disseminating vital information in a clear and concise manner
- Willingness and availability to cover overnight shifts
- Background in fire, dispatch, law enforcement, or first response (nice to have)
- Experience reporting on disasters, with an audience, on Facebook, X, etc. (nice to have)
- Understanding of technology, radio scanners, software engineering, etc. (nice to have)
- The willingness to assist with coverage outside your local area (nice to have)
