Gather, verify, and utilize information regarding wildfires
Monitor various sources including scanner traffic, fire cameras, user-submitted intel, official messages from agencies, and automated bot detections provided by Watch Duty
Collaborate and verify with other reporters to formulate alerts
Send out verified alerts to the public (reaching millions of people)
Work overnight shifts specifically as a volunteer reporter
Communicate and coordinate in real-time via Slack to support rapid incident verification and dissemination
Requirements
Must be 18 years of age or older
A community spirit and the desire to help others in times of need
Experience monitoring or listening to emergency communications
Ability to work in a team and collaborate in real-time on Slack (our internal messaging platform)
The ability to multitask while dealing with high-pressure situations
A professional approach to disseminating vital information in a clear and concise manner
Willingness and availability to cover overnight shifts
Background in fire, dispatch, law enforcement, or first response (nice to have)
Experience reporting on disasters, with an audience, on Facebook, X, etc. (nice to have)
Understanding of technology, radio scanners, software engineering, etc. (nice to have)
The willingness to assist with coverage outside your local area (nice to have)
