Communications

• Report to the Chief Executive Officer and serve on the executive team.
• Define Watch Duty’s public voice and sharpen brand identity across audiences and channels.
• Lead brand strategy and messaging across all audiences and channels.
• Oversee external communications including press, digital content, brand campaigns, field stories, and executive thought-leadership.
• Build and manage a small, nimble, high-impact communications team (FTE, volunteers, consultants).
• Develop and execute a communications strategy that supports and fuels Watch Duty’s growth and trusted reputation.
• Oversee selection, development, and optimization of platforms, tools, and systems powering communications and storytelling.
• Define and grow social media and digital storytelling presence prioritizing human-centered content.
• Develop multimedia content strategies (video, audio, photo, field dispatches, data visualizations).
• Serve as a point of contact in high-stakes or high-visibility moments and proactively shape public voice.
• Support crisis communications and rapid-response messaging during real-time disasters.
• Guide internal communications to ensure alignment and culture as the team scales.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and design to define product positioning, messaging, and go-to-market strategies for new features, tools, and services.
• Lead creation of launch plans that drive user adoption, retention, and engagement.
• Translate complex technical capabilities into clear benefits for user segments including first responders and the general public.
• Develop in-app language, onboarding flows, and content to enhance user clarity and brand trust.
• Establish and track KPIs for product marketing efforts and use insights to refine strategies and ensure measurable impact.

Chief Communications Officer

Journalist

• Gather, verify, and utilize information regarding wildfires
• Monitor various sources including scanner traffic, fire cameras, user-submitted intel, official messages from agencies, and automated bot detections provided by Watch Duty
• Collaborate and verify with other reporters to formulate alerts
• Send out verified alerts to the public (reaching millions of people)
• Work overnight shifts specifically as a volunteer reporter
• Communicate and coordinate in real-time via Slack to support rapid incident verification and dissemination
