About the role

  • You maintain and operate the institute's IT infrastructure for research and teaching (HPC and storage systems) and monitor its operational quality (availability, performance, capacity planning, security).
  • You support researchers in using the systems, operating numerical models, and developing and using analysis software.
  • You advise and assist researchers on research data management and Open Science.
  • You develop concepts and provide decision-making input for the ongoing adaptation and enhancement of the HPC systems.
  • You create user documentation and provide training in HPC and research data management.
  • You contribute to the further development of existing software and infrastructure.
  • You support researchers in using other HPC systems (e.g., ASC and ECMWF).
  • When required, you maintain the institute's basic IT infrastructure and procure necessary hardware and software.

Requirements

  • Relevant academic qualification (minimum: Bachelor's degree in IT or Geosciences) and/or secondary technical diploma (Matura/Fachmatura) combined with relevant professional experience
  • Technical expertise in the systems to be supported (storage systems and Linux clusters, queuing systems, maintenance of scientific software libraries)
  • System administration skills (analytical ability, problem-solving skills, security awareness, reliability, teamwork)
  • Strong interest in or experience with research data management and Open Science
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Service orientation, resilience, and flexibility
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Good written and spoken German or willingness to acquire these skills
  • Advantageous: knowledge of programming languages Python, Fortran, and C; experience with numerical models; and background in physics and geosciences.
