About the role
- Provide expert-level labor and employment advice to various business lines and stakeholders.
- Manage Labor and Employment attorneys and potentially other legal professionals.
- Manage various employment litigation matters, oversee external counsel, and manage budgets.
- Partner with HR and other internal stakeholders to proactively identify and mitigate risks and promote best practices in employment law compliance.
- Manage Senior Counsel, Counsel, Associate Counsel and/or paralegal staff, assigning responsibilities and evaluating results.
- Provide leadership, coaching, counseling and guidance to staff.
- Supervise external counsel providing advice or other legal services of the Company.
- Work closely with General Counsel, department attorneys and external legal counsel on specific legal issues related to the Company's business.
- Lead in one or more permanent or ad hoc practice groups or cross-practice teams of attorneys and staff.
- Advise lines of business on best practices that help minimize legal and litigation risk.
- Assist General Counsel in developing and managing departmental budget for both internal and external legal spend.
- Lead highly complex and sensitive negotiations; considers the long-term consequences and coaches clients towards protecting the Company's interest.
- Anticipate client needs; deal with complex legal issues.
- Clearly deliver difficult messages without jeopardizing client relationships.
- Provide pragmatic legal opinions with reasons and rationale.
- Provide advice in ambiguous situations; identify and prevent future legal risks; identify and take action on future opportunities.
- Resolve most situations where conflicts arise between the needs and desires of specific business units and the interests of the Company without requiring intervention of more senior attorneys.
- Recognize opportunities to use legal expertise to make a contribution to the business; is viewed by the client as a business partner.
- Demonstrate highest professional ethical and behavioral standards and comply with all applicable Bar Rules and Codes of Professional Responsibility, and corporate ethical and behavioral standards.
- Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelors degree required
- J.D. from an Accredited Law School required
- 15+ Years of related experience
- Substantial knowledge and depth of experience of at least one area of law relating to banking/financial services operations and issues
