About the role
- Plan and lead basic and detailed design of on-shore substations & HVDC/FACTS balance-of-plant design packages
- Manage and monitor detailed execution progress and engineering deliverables against budget and schedule
- Coordinate execution of substation/plant engineering design work packages performed by subcontractors
- Self-perform design work and produce documents for permits, procurement, manufacturing, and site construction
- Serve as project technical leader to develop scope of work, plan schedule and budgets
- Provide technical leadership and interface with Tendering, Cost Estimating, Partners, Customers, GE Product Engineering, EHS, Quality, Project Management Sourcing, and engineering sub-contractors
- Ensure design activities comply with applicable codes, standards, and GE Grid Solutions policies and procedures
- Design or oversee design of utility and industrial substations: one-line diagrams, general arrangements, specifications, equipment application and installation, building layouts, auxiliary power, raceway design, and related studies and calculations
- Propose and implement reporting processes to measure engineering progress and on-time delivery
- Manage technical risk, propose design strategy, and lead GATE and safety reviews
- Act as a resource for less experienced colleagues, communicate with stakeholders, and propose corrective action plans to Project Engineering Director when scope deviations occur
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- Minimum 10 years in HVDC system, FACTS, industrial, renewable, or utility HV & EHV substation design
- Professional Engineering license in the United States and willingness to review and seal drawings
- Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, including international; must comply with company travel and tax policies
- Knowledge of substation equipment and disciplines such as AIS & GIS, Transformers, P&C, and HV Electrical system engineering including HVDC and FACTS applications
- Basic civil engineering design knowledge
- Ability to self-perform design and certify finished engineering products (Professional Engineering reviews and sealing)
- Experience with permits, procurement, manufacturing, and site construction documentation
- Strong oral and written communication skills with correct English spelling, grammar, and syntax
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems
- EPC Project experience in High voltage substations
- Strong EHS and Quality mindset
- Mentoring mindset to develop technical talent
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
