Systems Engineer

• Build out Substack’s platforms to scale with growing traffic and a multitude of services to support writer and reader communities.
• Contribute to the whole product process in collaboration with designers, writers, support staff, and others.
• Own work from product concept and research to implementation and deployment.
• Work primarily with Node/Express, Postgres, Redis, and AWS.

iOS Engineer

• Build and support features to bring readers and writers to Substack and help them succeed.
• Develop the core Substack iOS app in Swift for creators and their audiences.
• Iterate on key user flows in the Substack iOS App, and run A/B tests on these flows.
• Collaborate with designers, product thinkers, writers, support staff, and others from product concept and research to implementation and deployment.
• Own work end-to-end and deliver high-quality solutions.
• Work directly with customers to solve their problems and participate in customer support.

• Design and build scalable ML infrastructure including model serving systems, feature stores, and training pipelines
• Develop and maintain robust data pipelines for ML workflows, from data ingestion to model deployment
• Implement MLOps best practices including CI/CD for ML models, monitoring, and automated retraining pipelines
• Build and optimize model serving infrastructure to support real-time and batch inference at scale
• Collaborate with ML engineers and data scientists to understand infrastructure requirements and translate them into reliable systems
• Monitor and optimize ML system performance, reliability, and cost efficiency
• Establish infrastructure standards and tooling to accelerate ML development workflows
• Own the deployment and operational aspects of ML models in production

• Develop the core Substack product for readers and writers across APIs, low-level services, databases, frontend UI, and testing.
• Work on live streaming, video recording, uploading, clipping, and all video product experiences.
• Support and collaborate with engineers, designers, writers, support staff, and others.
• Own work from product concept through implementation, experimentation, and measurement.
• Work directly with customers to solve their problems and participate in customer support.
• Use TypeScript, Node/Express, React, and Postgres; learn or apply these technologies.

• Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, empowering independent writers, artists, videographers, podcasters, and creators to make a living through subscriptions.
• Drive Technical Recruitment Processes: lead end-to-end recruitment activities from role kick-offs and sourcing to interviews, debriefs, and offers.
• Develop Diverse Talent Pipelines: implement inclusive sourcing strategies and leverage innovative channels to build a diverse pool of qualified candidates.
• Enhance Candidate Experience: design and deliver a highly engaging, professional, and memorable experience.
• Data-Driven Recruitment: establish, monitor, and analyze key recruiting metrics to optimize processes and forecast hiring needs.

Compliance

• Manage the regulatory workflows and ensure timely completion of requests for various regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, OSA
• Enforce Substack’s content guidelines by moderating flagged content and responding to tickets related to spam, copyright issues, content violations, data subject access requests, appeals, and account recovery
• Efficiently manage moderation and regulatory queues, maintaining accuracy while handling a large number of tickets daily
• Suggest improvements to our policies, procedures, tooling, and strategy to make the team more effective
• Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Partnerships to investigate complex, and at times urgent, issues facing users and the platform
• This is a full-time role with a Tuesday - Saturday schedule. Candidates are ideally located in SF and able to work in-person at least two days per week. We are also open to exceptional remote candidates based in the US or Canada
