General Counsel

• Providing strategic and commercially focused Data Privacy legal advice to support digital products, innovation projects, customer-facing platforms and strategic corporate initiatives;
• Advising on UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, PECR and related privacy legislation and regulatory developments;
• Reviewing, drafting and negotiating data privacy provisions within outsourcing agreements, data sharing agreements and wider technology and commercial contracts;
• Supporting the Bank’s use of AI, including advising on AI-specific contractual provisions and supporting implementation of AI initiatives alongside the Chief Data Officer function;
• Advising on international data transfers, including Standard Contractual Clauses, Binding Corporate Rules and other transfer mechanisms;
• Working closely with senior stakeholders across the Bank to deliver expert, accurate, concise, commercial and cost-effective legal advice that is readily understandable to non-lawyers;
• Collaborating closely with Data Privacy Compliance (including the DPO), Information Security, Data Privacy & Ethics and other business stakeholders to ensure a high standard of privacy compliance across Santander UK;
• Supporting Litigation, Retail, Business Banking and Santander Corporate Banking Legal teams on Data Privacy related queries;
• Keeping abreast of external developments in Data Privacy law and the financial services industry to enable Santander UK to react appropriately and in line with best practice, continuously seeking to improve processes, practices and policies;
• Sharing technical skills, experience and best practice with colleagues and the wider business and supporting other departments through training and the development of legal templates and checklists.
• Answering legal queries from internal customers as well as managing external suppliers/stakeholders to successfully deliver advice, projects and other outcomes on a timely basis.

• Supporting the end to end thematic reviews of OBE ready cases
• Conducting risk assessments and involvement in the outputs of this including Customer risk acceptance or exit decisioning
• Contributing and presenting at HRR forums
• Ensure all related HRR activities are processed in accordance with defined SLA’s, RFB policy and regulatory requirements.
• Proactively supporting the bank in meeting its business, legal, regulatory and stakeholder obligations in respect of Financial Crime Compliance, including identifying, deterring, detecting and disrupting money laundering, sanctions non-compliance, terrorist financing, bribery, corruption and tax evasion risks that arise by way of its activities.

Financial Crime

• Leads a Team of CORU analysts to ensure all CORU deliverables are completed within legally mandated deadlines and internally defined SLAs;
• Responsible for the allocation of CORU resources to manage workloads effectively to meet mandated and internal SLAs, driving performance and delivering results.
• Provides regular reporting on effectiveness and efficiency;
• Oversees fulfilment of relevant criminal and civil court orders served on the bank;
• Provide expert advice and guidance to CORU team members on interpretation of enquiries, stakeholder and risk management, escalating complex issues and risks to CORU managers when appropriate.
• Liaise with a wide range of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and Competent Authorities to provide relevant information or challenge in response to enquiries in line with legal requirements and the bank’s risk appetite.
• Proactively manages Freezing/Restraint Orders, responding to enquires from Law Enforcement Agencies and Competent Authorities;
• Identifies knowledge and training gaps within the team they lead, ensuring these are addressed appropriately.
• Contributes to the production and maintenance of relevant procedures and supporting materials to a high quality in line with RFB Financial Crime standards and requirements;
