About the role
- Own the managed DBA services vendor relationship, including work intake, prioritization, escalation, quality control, and acceptance of deliverables; ensure the vendor provides effective 24x7 operational coverage and drives measurable outcomes.
- Serve as the escalation point for high-impact database performance incidents (e.g., slow queries, full-text search degradation, poor I/O performance), including hands-on troubleshooting and remediation when required to protect application availability and end-user experience.
- Own database operations outcomes including deployments, patching and upgrades, availability, stability, operational risk management, and day-to-day operations for Microsoft SQL Server instances, with fractional responsibilities for Postgres and Elasticsearch.
- Direct and coordinate database operational activities during monthly maintenance windows; participate in CAB processes and ensure operational readiness, change validation, and appropriate documentation.
- Own database backup and recovery outcomes using native SQL Server tooling and operationalize recovery testing and documentation to support RPO/RTO objectives.
- Own database access provisioning and operational enforcement of least privilege/RBAC; drive consistency, implement access review processes, and partner with the Security team in reviewing vulnerability findings, evidence collection processes, and remediation of security vulnerabilities, including in FedRAMP-regulated environments.
- Build and improve operational visibility by defining dashboards/alerts and maturing monitoring practices, leveraging vendor tooling and internal observability platforms (e.g., Grafana Cloud).
- Steward and improve upon the existing automation ecosystem, improving consistency, documentation, maintainability, and operational safety.
- Drive capacity and cost initiatives by identifying constraints, prioritizing highest-impact remediation, and managing vendor-hour utilization to reduce overages and improve predictability.
- Establish and maintain runbooks, operational procedures, and escalation paths for database operations, including vendor handoffs, internal escalation protocols, and repeatable troubleshooting guidance.
- Respond to critical alerts during the working day, and after hours per escalation procedure.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of progressive responsibility supporting production database operations for Microsoft SQL Server.
- Ability to work with high autonomy and self-direct priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Ability to manage vendor relationships assertively and professionally, including pushing back, requiring evidence, and holding work to defined acceptance criteria.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Practical understanding of information technology concepts, protocols, industry best practices and ITIL processes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate with other teams across multiple time zones and geographies.
- Occasionally working evenings or weekends as required for scheduled or emergency maintenance.
- Strong Microsoft SQL Server expertise.
- Proven ability to diagnose and remediate performance issues such as slow queries, blocking/locking, and indexing/statistics considerations.
- Understanding of storage and I/O performance as they relate to SQL Server.
- Strong working knowledge of T-SQL scripting and development.
- Working knowledge of PowerShell scripting.
