About the role

  • Support the development of briefing materials, talking points, and background documents for PRP staff and local government leaders ahead of media interviews and press opportunities.
  • Coordinate media relations activities, from helping prioritize media opportunities to gathering information for journalists to vetting new media inquiries.
  • Track media coverage daily using platforms such as Meltwater (or similar tools), compile reports, and analyze reach, impact, and trends.
  • Monitor news around issue areas of focus; capturing and reporting out themes; identifying opportunities and recommendations on how best to take advantage of them.
  • Research specific reporters to understand their beats/style.
  • Build and maintain media lists focused on different issue areas, media, and markets.
  • Assist with media event production, such as press conferences or briefings.
  • Compile media clips and coverage reporting on a biweekly basis.
  • Provide support to the department leaders, such as taking notes during check-ins and other internal meetings; drafting agendas, notes, and next steps; and updating action plans.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of relevant professional experience, ideally within a government, campaign, advocacy, or policy environment, including at least 2 years coordinating media relations.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing media materials and supporting leaders ahead of press engagements.
  • Familiarity with media tracking and analytics platforms, with the ability to evaluate reach and engagement.
  • Strong interest in communications for social justice and a solid understanding of how the media industry operates.
  • Passion and commitment to using the power of government to protect marginalized communities’ civil rights and freedoms.
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Public Rights Project, especially diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
