About the role

  • Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes to outpatient visit types
  • Assign Evaluation and Management codes for physician encounters
  • Review medical records thoroughly using all available documentation to code diagnoses, procedures, and E/M services
  • Resolve NCCI, NCD/LCD or other outpatient edit claim failures as assigned
  • Collaborate with Patient Accounting, Registration, case managers, and other clinical areas to provide coding reimbursement expertise
  • Interpret health record documentation to report appropriate diagnoses and/or procedures
  • Follow ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and other coding references
  • Meet established minimum coding productivity and quality standards for each outpatient encounter type
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in acute healthcare setting (required)
  • RHIT or RHIA or CCS or CCS-P or COC or CPC (required)
  • AHIMA or AAPC membership (required)
  • Preferred: RHIA/RHIT with CCS, CCS-P, COC, CPC
  • Preferred: 4 years’ experience in acute healthcare setting
  • Preferred: 4 years’ experience in a professional setting
  • Expertise in ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding
  • Expertise with HCPC Level I and II procedural codes
  • Ability to assign CPT-4 codes and Evaluation and Management codes
  • Ability to resolve NCD/LCD and NCCI edits of hard-coded and soft-coded HCPC codes
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical disease process, pharmacology, and medical terminology
  • Ability to follow ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines, Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant and coding conventions
  • Must meet established minimum coding productivity and quality standards
  • Ability to achieve minimum of 95% coding accuracy
  • Must reside in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, or Wisconsin (remote work residency requirement)
