About the role
- Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of a modern Data & AI platform, driving long-term technical strategy and innovation.
- Define scalable, resilient data architectures supporting structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data across analytics, AI/ML, and operational workloads.
- Design and optimise data storage and distributed query layers using technologies such as Apache Spark, Trino, and similar engines.
- Drive adoption of OLAP and analytical query engines (e.g., ClickHouse, Apache Pinot) to support low-latency, high-concurrency analytics and real-time dashboards.
- Establish best practices for data modelling, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization to achieve sub-second performance at scale.
- Define standards for batch and streaming ingestion, data lifecycle management, retention, and cost–performance optimisation.
- Ensure seamless integration of analytical systems with data lakes, streaming platforms, BI tools, and AI/ML consumers.
- Own performance benchmarking, capacity planning, and operational excellence, ensuring high availability and predictable SLAs.
- Mentor and guide engineering teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
- Partner with product management and cross-functional leaders to align technical strategy with business goals and roadmap planning.
- Collaborate across engineering and security teams to ensure data quality, governance, privacy, and compliance.
- Manage relationships with cloud providers and technology vendors to support scalable, reliable platform operations.
- Other duties as needed.
Requirements
- Proven technical leader with experience designing and delivering cloud-based Data & AI platforms at scale.
- Ph.D. or MS in Computer Science (highly regarded but not necessary)
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in an Architect or Principal role owning complex, production-grade systems.
- Strong background in large-scale data platforms and distributed systems; experience in security or regulated environments is a plus.
- 5+ years building high-performance data systems, with hands-on expertise in performance tuning and production troubleshooting.
- Experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and/or modern data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or similar.
- Solid software engineering and system design skills, with proficiency in multiple programming languages.
- Excellent communicator with a proven ability to mentor and develop senior engineering talent.
