About the role

  • Provide advanced technical leadership, engineering expertise, and solution design services for a range of IT solutions for JHU and JHM research community.
  • Contribute to delivery of new service offerings for Research IT Solutions unit under Office of the Deputy CIO.
  • Design and facilitate secure, cutting-edge IT solutions and services in collaboration with key IT teams and support partners.
  • Define highly complex business/clinical/education problems by meeting with clients to observe and understand current processes.
  • Provide written documentation of findings and gather highly complex system requirements.
  • Develop detailed tasks and project plans for highly complex projects; direct lower-level staff and review their work.
  • Write functional/technical specifications and develop/change data input, files/database structures, algorithms, and data output.
  • Document code and associated processes; provide monitoring and guidance to junior staff.
  • Create and document highly complex test scenarios; test all changes and author/maintain documentation.
  • Implement changes adhering to change management policies; monitor changes and resolve highly complex problems.
  • Provide support by investigating and resolving highly complex issues to ensure prompt, effective service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, computer information systems, information technology, electronic engineering, or a related field.
  • Six years of related experience with computer systems and applications.
  • Strong background in research computing environments supporting complex, data-intensive projects across multiple disciplines.
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and advanced services, including cloud-based research and AI/ML capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in solution design, systems integration, and workflow automation for research IT solutions.
  • Expertise in deploying and managing containerized applications and scalable computing platforms to support research workflows.
  • Experience supporting advanced research applications, software development lifecycles, and CI/CD practices in collaborative environments.
  • Strong coding and scripting skills (e.g., Python, R, Bash, or similar) for building, automating, and optimizing research solutions.
  • Proven ability to mentor staff, develop technical guidance and documentation, and consult effectively with research teams.
  • Knowledge of compliance, data governance, and institutional best practices for research computing and data stewardship.
  • Communication Skills – ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences, while being respectful of diverse perspectives.
  • Data Sensitivity and Compliance – familiarity with data protection principles and relevant regulations such as HIPAA and FERPA.
  • Technical Skills and Expected Level of Proficiency: Agile Methodology, Algorithms, API, CI/CD, Cloud Serverless Computing Architecture, Code Review, Data Architecture and Design, Data Structures, Debugging, Dev Ops, Integration Testing, JIRA, New Product Development, Secure Coding, Service Orientated Architecture, Software Design Patterns, Software Development Life Cycle, Software Engineering, Unit Testing.
