About the role
- Build a strong book of profitable business while also auditing policies to ensure adherence to company standards
- Coach underwriters and assist in negotiating with brokers on larger opportunities
- Train brokers and underwriting staff on underwriting matters
- Communicate on a regular basis with key broker contacts on accounts, plans and results
- Liaison with the Business Development Team to reinforce and facilitate desired effects to the broker’s portfolio performance
- Manage employee performance and contribute to the salary review process
- Hold regular team meetings with staff to communicate corporate and branch issues and to respond to employee issues
- Participate in the establishment of premium and loss ratio targets
- Authorize the acceptance of new business, renewals and endorsements
- Promote the company’s products through information sessions with brokers
- Develop and manage effective working relationships with brokers, staff, and other departments
- Establish and maintain service levels by organizing and monitoring work flow and setting priorities to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity
- Establish goals and monitor the development of underwriting staff to ensure achievement of department Business Plan
Requirements
- University and/or College Degree or any combination of equivalent education and experience
- Minimum 8 to 10 years of underwriting experience in Commercial or Specialty Lines with focus on marketing/business growth, including minimum 3 years in people management
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation is an asset
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail
- Can work in a constantly changing environment
- Strong customer service orientation
- Open to travel within Canada
