About the role

  • Build a strong book of profitable business while also auditing policies to ensure adherence to company standards
  • Coach underwriters and assist in negotiating with brokers on larger opportunities
  • Train brokers and underwriting staff on underwriting matters
  • Communicate on a regular basis with key broker contacts on accounts, plans and results
  • Liaison with the Business Development Team to reinforce and facilitate desired effects to the broker’s portfolio performance
  • Manage employee performance and contribute to the salary review process
  • Hold regular team meetings with staff to communicate corporate and branch issues and to respond to employee issues
  • Participate in the establishment of premium and loss ratio targets
  • Authorize the acceptance of new business, renewals and endorsements
  • Promote the company’s products through information sessions with brokers
  • Develop and manage effective working relationships with brokers, staff, and other departments
  • Establish and maintain service levels by organizing and monitoring work flow and setting priorities to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity
  • Establish goals and monitor the development of underwriting staff to ensure achievement of department Business Plan

Requirements

  • University and/or College Degree or any combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum 8 to 10 years of underwriting experience in Commercial or Specialty Lines with focus on marketing/business growth, including minimum 3 years in people management
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation is an asset
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail
  • Can work in a constantly changing environment
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Open to travel within Canada
