About the role

  • Set and execute the technical and organizational strategy for Spend Engineering, balancing latency, feature velocity, and risk controls.
  • Collaborate across cross-functional partners (Product, Risk, Fraud, Data, Compliance) to define goals, sequencing, and tradeoffs.
  • Own delivery and operations of mission‑critical authorization and transaction processing services, with aggressive SLOs, comprehensive runbooks, and high‑quality on‑call practices.
  • Evolve monitoring and alerting around business outcomes like approval rates, decline reasons, latency distribution, and network compliance metrics.
  • Lead architecture to support real‑time spending controls, merchant enrichment, multi‑product authorization logic, and network integrations as we scale.
  • Lead and develop a diverse and talented team of engineers across a spectrum of seniority.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years managing fullstack teams operating 24x7 services.
  • Strong systems architecture skills across distributed systems, low‑latency design, idempotency, and exactly‑once processing semantics.
  • Proven track record improving reliability, latency, and on‑call effectiveness in high‑stakes, real‑time domains.
  • Clear, direct communication; ability to align cross‑functional stakeholders and lead through ambiguity.
  • Nice to haves: Experience building and operating card authorization, transaction processing, or payment switching systems at scale, with strong knowledge of ISO 8583, card network rules, and authorization flows, as well as hands-on exposure to Visa/Mastercard network integrations, fraud and risk decisioning systems, spend controls and limits engines, regulated environments, or large-scale platform refactors.
