About the role
- Oversee up to four engineering teams — each with their own Technical Lead.
- Oversee architecture and infrastructure decisions for the Biosphere platforms.
- Uphold engineering best practices—code quality, CI/CD, testing, and security standards.
- Drive technical innovation and optimise delivery processes (Agile/Scrum/Kanban).
- Establish robust metrics, monitor team performance, and drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure timely, high-quality releases with reliability and maintainability in mind.
- Line-manage 3–4 Technical Leads; provide coaching, performance development, and mentorship.
- Ensure career growth through planning and regular feedback; contribute to creation and implementation of transparent career ladders.
- Align engineering roadmaps with business goals and product direction.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, Customer Success and Infrastructure teams to deliver impactful features and encourage direct collaboration with Infrastructure colleagues.

Requirements
- Proven experience managing multiple engineering teams (preferably 3–4), including line-management of Technical Leads.
- Bachelor's degree - preferably in Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar, but other degrees would be considered.
- At least 10 years experience in the software development realm.
- At least 3 years leading teams.
- Experience with our primary languages (PHP and Javascript/Typescript) would be beneficial.
- Strong technical leadership in SaaS, Cloud-based platforms—ideally with real-time, data-driven applications.
- Experience with Agile methodologies and delivery frameworks.
- Strong grasp of architecture, and an ability to lead architectural decision making.
- Solid understanding of engineering best practices: CI/CD, code reviews, test automation, observability, security; and a track record of implementing them.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow technical leaders.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across functions.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration, preferably in GCP or AWS environments.
- Experience decomposing monolithic application into finer grained services.
- Comfortable with regular UK travel and monthly visits to Farnborough and Manchester.
