About the role
- Design, implement, iterate, and polish compelling boss encounters in Unreal Engine
- Own the boss design process from start to finish within the game's creative direction and combat design framework
- Work closely with design leadership to ensure boss fights are fun, challenging, balanced, and aligned with overall gameplay vision
- Collaborate with animators, programmers, and artists to bring boss behaviors and visuals to life
- Use Unreal Blueprints and proprietary state machines to implement combat logic and animation behavior
- Tune boss pacing, challenge, and mechanics for a high-quality player experience
- Provide and receive feedback across the team, iterating rapidly while maintaining high quality
- Troubleshoot, debug, and refine boss AI and behavior throughout production
Requirements
- Passionate about boss design and high-stakes combat encounters
- Experience designing and implementing combatants in Unreal using Blueprints and state machines
- Understand animation fundamentals and how to sync gameplay systems to animation timing
- Strong communicator and collaborator
- Attention to detail and delivering polished, responsive combat
- Understand modern combat design techniques
- Proactive, self-motivated, able to work independently
- Bonus: Animation implementation or technical animation experience
- Bonus: Shipped at least one action game title
- Bonus: Background in combat systems design, especially boss AI and player readability
- Bonus: Experience with encounter scripting or narrative-driven boss fights
- Bonus: Familiarity with creature or humanoid enemy design principles
- Bonus: Comfort with gameplay tuning and balancing
- Must complete I-9 and provide documentation to confirm identity and authorization to work in the United States

- Pay range: $70,000-$85,000 (base)
