About the role
- Perform high-level copyediting and quality control on documents resulting from the scientific peer review of Department of Defense grant applications, applying AMA style with program-specific exceptions.
- Navigate and revise editorial toolkits, SOPs, and style guides to reflect an ever-evolving multi-tier editorial workflow.
- Rapidly identify and update all instances of affected content within toolkit and style guide materials when process changes occur.
- Provide constructive, actionable editorial feedback to other editors (first-line through final QC) to support skills development and consistency.
- Serve as a “super user” editor able to work in any editing phase to resolve priority editorial issues and ensure final quality before production.
- Partner with the team manager to support key editorial operations, including but not limited to piloting and implementing workflow improvements, automation tools, and feedback systems; preparing program-specific editing notes for distribution to editors; reviewing project manager pricing specifications to help finalize staffing plans; and contributing to editor training by mentoring peers and supporting their skill development.
- Maintain a cooperative, solutions-focused approach in cross-functional work, demonstrating sensitivity to the responsibilities and constraints of other departments.
- Uphold editorial quality while supporting innovation, adaptability, and continuous process refinement.
Requirements
- Adaptability, Copy Editing, Editing Process, Microsoft Word, Proofreading
- 10 + years of related experience
- PhD in a life science, biomedical science, environmental science, or related research discipline; equivalent advanced research degrees (e.g., ScD, DrPH, DS, EngD) in a scientific field may be considered.
- In lieu of a doctoral degree, a minimum of 15 years of directly relevant scientific peer review editing experience may be accepted.
- At least 10 years of hands-on experience in scientific editing, including copyediting deliverables and summary statement documents resulting from the peer review of biomedical research grant applications.
- Demonstrated familiarity with Department of Defense research funding mechanisms and processes.
- Proven ability to develop, update, and maintain editorial training materials, toolkits, and workflow documentation.
- Strong track record of providing constructive editorial feedback to peers.
- Mastery of AMA Manual of Style, with the ability to apply and adapt program-specific exceptions.
- Advanced proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and strong capability in SharePoint.
