About the role

  • Create and drive a comprehensive government relations strategy in support of bp’s Australian ambitions
  • Orchestrate an ‘always-on’ program of engagement to elevate bp’s influence across government
  • Interact with stakeholders including trade associations and thinktanks to build coalitions aligned to bp’s position
  • Service several businesses in a matrixed organisation and generate insights on political & policy developments
  • Act as an emissary of bp’s senior leadership and facilitate engagement by visiting leaders, policy experts, and Comms & External Affairs team members
  • Contribute to public policy advocacy plans in support of bp Australia’s country strategy
  • Support analysis of federal and state policy and regulatory frameworks (all Australian states less WA), focusing on energy, resources, climate change, environment, and Northern Australia development
  • Lead development and implementation of government relations activities: identify and manage senior political, government department and regulatory stakeholders; drive engagement plans with senior executives and SMEs; frame action plans to emerging opportunities & risks; coordinate public submissions
  • Advocate bp’s position with legislative and regulatory bodies, in private meetings, and at external events
  • Recommend legislative design to deliver optimal energy transition outcomes
  • Optimise engagements with industry regulators, opinion formers, policymakers, trade organisations and customer groups
  • Help shape industry messaging and provide stakeholders with information to form fact-based viewpoints
  • Support issues and crisis management plans, processes, and events

Requirements

  • Extensive Government Affairs experience – either in-house, a consultancy or political office
  • Extensive experience in multi-jurisdiction major project and policy delivery in regulated industries with proven competencies in policy development and advocacy
  • Extensive experience working in public policy development, parliamentary processes and Australia’s political landscape
  • Experience of coordinating advocacy activities across internal and external boundaries
  • Excellent networking capability, inter-personnel, and stakeholder management skills
  • A proven ability to work on and manage multiple simultaneous projects and achieve successful outcomes
  • A proactive approach to identifying emerging issues
