About the role

  • Design and implement the layout, equipment selection, and operational procedures for a new machine shop
  • Identify and procure necessary machinery, tools, and software to support manufacturing needs
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for machine shop equipment
  • Recruit, train, and mentor a team of manufacturing technicians and machinists
  • Oversee daily operations, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to production schedules
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback
  • Develop, implement, and optimize manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product quality
  • Apply Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to identify and eliminate waste
  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure compliance with defense industry standards (e.g., ISO, AS9100)
  • Provide technical guidance on complex machining operations and problem-solving
  • Collaborate with design engineers to ensure manufacturability of new products
  • Evaluate and implement new manufacturing technologies and materials
  • Ensure all machine shop operations comply with safety regulations; develop and enforce safety protocols and training programs

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
  • Master's degree preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering with a strong emphasis on machine shop operations
  • Proven experience building out and managing a machine shop from the ground up
  • Demonstrated experience managing a team of technicians and machinists
  • Experience in the defense industry or with high-precision manufacturing (highly desirable)
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks, Mastercam, Fusion 360)
  • Deep understanding of various machining processes (CNC milling, turning, grinding, EDM)
  • Knowledge of metrology and inspection techniques
  • Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance
