About the role
- Lead the Runner team building and evolving Zapier’s Zap Execution platform
- Ensure the execution pipeline is robust, observable, performant, and cost-effective
- Collaborate across Zapier to support internal teams building automation features and AI workflows
- Establish and maintain platform stakeholder relationships through syncs, roadmap reviews, and documentation
- Coach and develop senior and staff-level engineers through 1:1s, mentorship, and growth planning
- Shape quarterly and long-term technical roadmap in partnership with Product and Infrastructure
- Ensure team adherence to engineering best practices including security, reliability, and architecture
- Continuously improve development and release processes via retrospectives and tooling
- Define and track metrics related to execution success, reliability, and platform health and communicate to leadership
- Contribute to hiring and onboarding new engineers and stay close to user impact by collaborating with support and customer-facing teams
Requirements
- Deep experience building and operating complex distributed systems at scale
- Experience in high-volume production environments with a strong reliability mindset
- Experience building and leading platform teams
- Skilled at managing internal customer relationships, feedback loops, rituals, and roadmap planning
- Experience managing and growing senior and staff-level engineers; coaching and mentorship
- Customer- and data-driven: define and monitor success metrics and adapt priorities based on data
- Hands-on experience with Python
- Experience with AWS services such as SQS, S3, and Lambda, optimizing for performance and cost
- Strong cross-functional collaboration with product, design, support, and infrastructure teams
- Product-owner mindset: shaping and prioritizing platform roadmap and balancing tech debt
