About the role
- Lab Management: Manage the day-to-day operations of the hardware lab, including equipment maintenance, calibration, and inventory management.
- Budget Management: Develop and manage the lab budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness.
- Resource Allocation: Coordinate lab resources and equipment to support multiple engineering projects.
- Safety & Compliance: ensuring all equipment and hazardous materials meet local and international regulatory standards
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of lab equipment, procedures, and calibrations.
- Testing & DOEs: Design well thought out Design of Experiments (DOEs) to characterize new materials, test hardware designs and validate manufacturing processes.
- Fixture & Tooling Design: Support development of custom test fixtures through CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
- Equipment: Oversee the installation, use and preventative maintenance/calibration of critical laboratory hardware (e.g., Instron machines, thermal chambers, CT scanner).
- Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance lab efficiency and productivity.
- Cross-Functional Partnerships: Support information sharing between Product Design, Materials Science, Quality and Reliability teams and help define testing requirements for emerging product roadmaps.
- Collaboration: Work closely with electrical, mechanical and materials engineers to support their hardware testing needs.
- Training: Provide training to engineering staff on the proper use of lab equipment.
Requirements
- Education: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field.
- Experience: 5+ years in a hardware lab environment, with at least 3 years in a management or technical lead capacity.
- Skills: Ability to run experiments, collect data, analyze results, and translate insights into design or process improvements.
- Competent in SolidWorks, NXFusion 360, or similar for fixture design and 3D printing.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical test and measurement equipment (e.g., force column testers, microscopy, thermal chambers, etc.).
- Systems Thinking: Experience implementing or managing inventory and workflow systems (Jira, LIMS, or custom databases).
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices for laboratory environments.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively across disciplines. Experience collaborating with automation, equipment vendors, and global manufacturing partners.
