About the role
- Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing team of product design engineering leaders and individual contributors.
- Set clear technical direction and engineering standards across multiple product programs.
- Partner closely with Product Management, Industrial Design, and Hardware Engineering leadership to define and execute long-term product design strategy aligned with business objectives.
- Influence roadmap decisions through deep understanding of user needs, system tradeoffs, and manufacturing realities.
- Own the mechanical and product design lifecycle from early concept exploration through detailed design, validation, and mass production.
- Ensure disciplined execution across multiple concurrent development efforts.
- Champion user comfort, ergonomics, durability, and premium product experience in close collaboration with Industrial Design and UX partners.
- Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) best practices to optimize yield, quality, cost, and scalability.
- Partner with Operations and Supply Chain teams to ensure successful production ramps.
- Provide deep expertise in materials, mechanics of materials, tolerance analysis, and system-level integration.
- Guide critical tradeoff decisions across performance, reliability, cost, and schedule.
- Work seamlessly across Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Firmware, Software, Reliability, Quality, and Operations teams to ensure cohesive system-level outcomes.
- Proactively identify design, reliability, and manufacturing risks and ensure mitigation plans are executed early and rigorously.
- Engage and manage external design firms, suppliers, and manufacturing partners as needed.
Requirements
- Senior Technical Leadership Experience: Proven experience leading mechanical design engineering organizations, including managers-of-managers.
- Drive: Demonstrated ability and expertise driving new product development programs, and new technology development
- Product Design Expertise: 12+ years of experience in consumer product design engineering, with significant experience shipping high-volume, high-quality products. Wearables or small form-factor electronics experience are strongly preferred.
- Materials & Mechanical Depth: Deep foundation in mechanics of materials, structural design, and material selection across metals, polymers, ceramics, and glass.
- Manufacturing Acumen: Strong command of DFM/DFA principles and experience scaling products into mass production. Experience working with and leading global manufacturing partners.
- CAD Expertise: Advanced proficiency with Siemens NX
- Executive Communication: Ability to clearly articulate technical concepts, tradeoffs, and risks to executive and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strategic Mindset: Strong systems thinker with sound judgment, a bias for action, and a results-oriented approach.
