About the role

  • Manages emergencies by directing other specialists, assigning and orchestrating tasks accordingly when responding to multiple emergencies.
  • Serves as a preceptor in the onboarding of newly promoted Public Safety Lieutenants, and Sergeants, to include orientation and training.
  • Oversees platoon staff performance evaluations and scheduling.
  • In the absence of the Major, assumes command of the area of assignment.
  • Maintains overall command of an assigned platoon or unit.
  • Oversees the management and coordination of daily duties of assigned personnel.
  • Assists in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of Public Safety Officer candidates.
  • Oversees personnel matters in area of assignment, including mentoring, development, and training of all staff under command.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of effective labor management relations.
  • Assumes operation and command of law enforcement investigations and incidents as necessary.
  • Plans, organizes, and manages various projects and programs focused on community oriented policing and continuous quality improvement.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of Public Safety Department policies and procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains positive relations with the University community.
  • Maintains liaison with other law enforcement agencies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required
  • Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 4 years of service with the Department of Public Safety, 2 of those at the rank of Lieutenant required
  • Working knowledge of principles and techniques of police and investigative work; applicable municipal laws, ordinances, and regulations; interpersonal communication and modern management skills required
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in areas of responsibilities required
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State upon hire required and A NYS Sworn Peace Officer upon hire required
