About the role
- Manages emergencies by directing other specialists, assigning and orchestrating tasks accordingly when responding to multiple emergencies.
- Serves as a preceptor in the onboarding of newly promoted Public Safety Lieutenants, and Sergeants, to include orientation and training.
- Oversees platoon staff performance evaluations and scheduling.
- In the absence of the Major, assumes command of the area of assignment.
- Maintains overall command of an assigned platoon or unit.
- Oversees the management and coordination of daily duties of assigned personnel.
- Assists in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of Public Safety Officer candidates.
- Oversees personnel matters in area of assignment, including mentoring, development, and training of all staff under command.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of effective labor management relations.
- Assumes operation and command of law enforcement investigations and incidents as necessary.
- Plans, organizes, and manages various projects and programs focused on community oriented policing and continuous quality improvement.
- Assists in the development and implementation of Public Safety Department policies and procedures.
- Establishes and maintains positive relations with the University community.
- Maintains liaison with other law enforcement agencies.
Requirements
- High School diploma required
- Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 4 years of service with the Department of Public Safety, 2 of those at the rank of Lieutenant required
- Working knowledge of principles and techniques of police and investigative work; applicable municipal laws, ordinances, and regulations; interpersonal communication and modern management skills required
- Ability to work under minimal supervision in areas of responsibilities required
- DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State upon hire required and A NYS Sworn Peace Officer upon hire required
