About the role
- Manage all inventory accounting processes, including cost accounting, inventory valuation, reserves, and obsolescence
- Ensure accurate and timely recording of inventory transactions in the general ledger by partnering with operations and supply chain teams
- Oversee physical inventory counts and cycle counts; investigate and resolve discrepancies
- Analyze inventory variances and trends, and clearly communicate findings to management
- Maintain and improve internal controls related to inventory
- Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes related to inventory and COGS
- Prepare inventory-related journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement disclosures
- Partner with operations and supply chain teams to understand inventory drivers
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and inventory planning
- Lead annual financial and bank audits for Inventory and COGS, providing documentation and explanations as needed across other areas.
- Lead or mentor inventory accounting staff, as applicable
- Drive process improvements and system enhancements related to inventory accounting
- Work cross-functionally to assign ownership for close-related tasks and communicate progress in real time during the close process
Requirements
- 5-7 years of accounting experience with significant inventory exposure
- Experience in a manufacturing, distribution, or retail environment, with strong preference for CPG
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA or CMA preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and inventory accounting principles
- Experience with cost accounting and variance analysis
- Advanced proficiency with ERP systems (NetSuite strongly preferred), including transactional inventory and COGS workflows
- Advanced Excel skills, with the ability to analyze, transform, and manage large datasets
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and communicate clearly with non-accounting partners
- Comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Experience with inventory controls and SOX compliance is preferred
- Prior people management experience is preferred
