About the role

  • Provide services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas.
  • Perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results.
  • May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology.
  • Follow established procedures to perform all lab tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Provide guidance and consultation to Medical Laboratory Technicians in the interpretation of complex testing or unusual findings.
  • Assess acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintain integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process.
  • Perform set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing.
  • Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment.
  • Document all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Operate all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results.
  • Perform moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas.
  • Perform calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Adhere to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data.
  • Inform the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results.
  • Recognize critical and/or life-threatening results and notify the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy.
  • Resolve and document procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notify the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems.
  • Maintain all records and documentation needed to comply with TJC, CAP, AABB, Medicare, Medicaid, and hospital laboratory regulations.
  • Orient and instruct new employees and students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
  • May perform duties of charge technologist in the absence of the supervisor.
  • May assist supervisor in preparation for Department and Laboratory wide inspections.
  • Obtain and process specimens from patients as required using established techniques.
  • Assist in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Assist with maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties.
  • Notify appropriate person when supply levels fall to reorder levels.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • MT (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • Professional knowledge of medical technology principles, theory, and methodology sufficient to perform clinical laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to endure periods of heavy workload and stress.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback and initiate appropriate actions to correct situations.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed.
  • Minimum one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.
