- Ocean Marine specializes in ocean cargo, marine liabilities, hull and protection indemnity, and yacht coverage for small and mid-size businesses.
- The AVP Managing Director (AVP MD), Ocean Marine is a senior field leadership position with responsibilities for multiple BI Regions that works in conjunction with the Field Practice Leaders (FPL) and CEM RVPs to drive the implementation and management of underwriting decisions to enhance the overall profitability, growth, and retention of business.
- In addition, the AVP MD partners with the FPLs and / or RVPs on strategic staffing and talent development while independently overseeing a large team of underwriters who partner with agents and brokers to provide new and renewal business based on customers' needs.
- Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of one or more business lines within a region.
- Accountable for one of the largest and most complex books of business within Ocean Marine.
- Partner with FPL and business unit leadership to develop and implement short and long-term business strategies to increase the business unit's presence in the market, retain the appropriate mix of business, and achieve profit and growth objectives.
- Effectively manage local strategies, objectives, and tactics concerning relationships with brokers and agencies.
- Underwrite and skillfully negotiate the most complex, at-risk, or hard-to-close deals.
- Provide direction and coaching to others in closing challenging deals.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with external partners as well as internal partners across Business Insurance and the enterprise to create sales strategies and identify cross-selling opportunities.
- Regularly meet in person with agents and brokers and have the ability to travel to these meetings.
- With FPL and Human Resources partners, set strategic direction for region-wide staffing initiatives, including recruiting plans, talent development, and performance management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelors degree; Ten or more years of relevant underwriting experience with experience in commercial lines; Six or more years of people management experience; Expert level knowledge of Ocean Marine products, the regulatory environment, and the local insurance market; Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to proactively identify underwriting, marketing, or financial challenges and analyze available information to make timely decisions in alignment with our risk appetite; Excellent communication skills with the ability to successfully negotiate in the most difficult situations with agents and brokers; Demonstrated leadership and strategic capabilities (regional strategies, staffing plans, etc.).
- Six years of underwriting experience.
- Three years of leadership experience.
