About the role
- Supports daily budget operations by executing transactions like budget amendments, journal entries, costing allocation changes, and budget requests, adhering to financial plans and cost-effective techniques
- Generates monthly and quarterly variance analyses comparing budgeted amounts to actual performance, identifying deviations and providing insights for financial oversight and decision-making
- Assists in providing financial analysis and guidance to department managers, enabling informed decisions aligned with financial goals and strategic objectives
- Assists in supporting a rotating portfolio of coverage, initially focusing on Branch Libraries, to develop a comprehensive understanding of all budget areas
- As part of a team of analysts, performs key analytical and coordination tasks in support of the annual and multi-year budget processes and planning exercises
- Assists in the preparation of financial reports and presentations, both routine and ad-hoc, simplifying complex financial information for effective communication
- Assists in training non-finance staff on budget management tools and financial policies and procedures, promoting responsible financial stewardship
- Supports the preparation and reporting of grant and gift proposals, ensuring accurate budget projections and donor requirement compliance
- Undertakes related duties as required to support the Budget Office and the Library's financial management objectives, including special projects and financial research
- Performs other related duties as necessary
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- 1-2 years of office work experience
- Experience working in Finance/Budget departments, particularly in the not-for-profit sector, preferable
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to work well, both independently and as part of a team
- Good quantitative analysis and budgeting skills, including the ability to process large data sets and digest complex spreadsheets
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and work well under the pressure of tight deadlines
- Strong analytic, problem-solving and time management skills
- Strong computer skills, including spreadsheets, using Microsoft Windows and Google applications
- Ability to handle confidential information using discretion and sound judgment
- Knowledge of the New York City budget and approval process, preferable
- Experience with Workday Adaptive Planning, OLAP/TM1, NYC’s FMS, other budgeting software, preferable
