About the role
- Lead and manage DRC’s finance function, ensuring robust governance and financial controls
- Oversee departmental financial functions including budgeting, payroll, statutory accounts and service delivery to meet internal and external deadlines
- Collaborate with the Executive Team and Board to shape financial strategy and provide effective reporting for strategic planning and risk management
- Support budget holders with expert financial guidance and ensure operational decisions reflect financial implications
- Lead and develop the Finance Team including recruitment, training and performance management
- Produce timely and accurate monthly management accounts, Income & Expenditure, Balance Sheet and variance analysis
- Prepare year end schedules and coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors
- Maintain cash flow forecasts, advise on financial strategy, and ensure compliance with reserves policy
- Manage treasury, bank mandates, debtor and supplier management and credit control
- Manage external payroll provider and oversee payroll coordination with HR & Regulatory Compliance Manager
- Oversee Gift Aid claims, Corporation Tax, VAT reviews and assess tax implications
- Ensure compliance with statutory obligations to HMRC, Charity Commission, Companies House and funders
- Maintain GDPR and Data Protection compliance across financial systems and CRM platforms
- Lead procurement, contract reviews and recommend re-procurements to Chief Executive
- Provide financial input for funding bids, tender submissions, and produce accurate claims and returns for funders
- Oversee finance systems and IT including Sage, CRM, telephony, outsourced IT providers and digitalisation of financial records
- Oversee facilities management, Health and Wellbeing Centre services, health and safety arrangements and value for money in contracts
- Report directly to the Chief Executive and Finance & Risk Sub-Committee and liaise with Treasurer and Chair
- Serve as an active Executive Team member, deputise for Chief Executive as required and act as authorised bank signatory
- Maintain confidentiality, adhere to safeguarding policies and undertake occasional evening and weekend work as required
Requirements
- Qualified accountant with one of the following professional accountancy bodies: ACCA, CIMA, ACA, CIPFA, MAAT, CCAB
- Experience of strategically leading a finance function in a Charity, medium sized social or commercial enterprise
- Proven track record in all aspects of financial operations and management including payroll and pensions administration
- Experience of working across business models – grants/contracts/charged for services
- Experience of pricing/budgeting for quotations, funding applications and tender bids
- Experience of preparing financial claims and returns for funders and/or investors
- Proven track record of preparing year end accounts and of overseeing annual audit processes
- Experience of leading and developing teams
- Experience of working with Boards and presenting financial information to non-financial stakeholders
- Fully conversant with accounting procedures legislation including Charity and Company statutory reporting requirements
- Understanding of charity SORP and fund accounting
- Knowledge of financial planning, forecasting and analysis techniques
- Knowledge and understanding of long-term strategic business planning and corporate risk management
- Knowledge of disability equality and issues affecting disabled people (desirable)
- Highly developed leadership and inter-personal skills
- Excellent numerical and financial skills including financial modelling, management accounts, managing audits and implementing financial controls
- Excellent understanding and working knowledge of IT systems including computerised accounts and payroll packages
- Well-developed IT skills for using Microsoft Office package and Microsoft 365
- Experience with Sage accounting software and CRM systems
- Familiarity with payroll portals and working with external payroll providers
- Knowledge of VAT, Gift Aid, Corporation Tax, HMRC compliance
- Knowledge of GDPR and Data Protection requirements
- Understanding of Cyber Essentials quality standard and working with outsourced IT providers
- Analytic and decisive decision-making skills with ability to prioritise and communicate
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to be mobile and travel to various locations as required
- Enhanced DBS disclosure required (work with vulnerable adults)
