About the role

  • Take full end-to-end ownership of multiple client payrolls, from data input and validation through to submission, payments, and post-payroll reconciliation and pensions uploads.
  • Personally carry out payroll processing, checks, reconciliations, and submissions, ensuring accuracy and compliance at every stage.
  • Be accountable for payroll deadlines, statutory submissions, and payment accuracy.
  • Apply up-to-date UK payroll legislation and HMRC guidance confidently to real-world scenarios.
  • Proactively identify issues, risks, or inefficiencies and take ownership of resolving them.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for payroll-related client queries, providing clear, confident, and professional communication.
  • Work closely with the Head of Payroll on payroll implementations, system changes, and process improvements.
  • Support the development of payroll processes, documentation, and controls as the bureau scales.
  • Contribute to the evolution of payroll automation and API integrations to reduce manual effort over time.
  • As the team grows, gradually take on line management and mentoring responsibilities, with full support and training provided.

Requirements

  • You are a highly competent payroll professional with strong, up-to-date knowledge of UK payroll legislation, and are confident applying it in practice.
  • You have experience running payrolls end-to-end, ideally in a bureau or multi-client environment, and are comfortable being accountable for the final output.
  • You are confident working with payroll systems and can quickly understand, configure, and adapt to new systems and processes.
  • You enjoy working with data and have an analytical mindset, able to think through non-standard scenarios and solve problems pragmatically.
  • You are detail-oriented but also able to understand dependencies, prioritise effectively, and anticipate what needs to happen next.
  • You communicate clearly, confidently, and professionally with clients, both verbally and in writing.
  • You may be stepping into your first management role, or already have some management experience, and are keen to develop leadership capability alongside technical delivery.
  • You take ownership of your work, are comfortable making decisions, and stand by your judgement.
  • You are motivated by learning, progression, and being part of a growing function where you can make a real and visible impact.
  • This role suits someone who enjoys owning payroll delivery today, while having the opportunity to grow into broader bureau leadership responsibilities as the team and client base expand.
