About the role

  • The Biological Scientist III is an OPS position working in the Overdose Data to Action-Local (OD2A-L) program at the Florida Department of Health in Broward County (DOH-Broward).
  • This program is grant funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC).
  • This position works under the direct supervision of the OD2A-L Program Manager, within the Division of Community Health.
  • The incumbent of this position will serve as the program’s Data Analyst, driving data-informed decision-making within the OD2A-L initiative by using informatics and statistical tools to analyze, model, and visualize public health data.
  • The incumbent will help uncover trends, patterns, and predictive signals in overdose-related data - insights that directly inform prevention strategies and community health efforts.
  • Additionally, this position requires utilization of complex epidemiologic analytic techniques and involves collection of information regarding individual case reports as well as participation in outbreak investigations.
  • Through this position, DOH-Broward will enhance the timelines of morbidity and mortality data by conducting drug overdose surveillance, using Florida’s syndromic surveillance system (SyS), Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics (ESSENCE) data investigation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience performing duties related to data informatics and analysis.
  • One (1) or more years of experience conducting epidemiological case investigations (preferred).
  • One (1) or more years of experience with/knowledge of using R, SAS, SQL, or ArcGIS (preferred).
  • One (1) or more years of experience using ESSENCE (preferred).
  • One (1) or more years of experience with/knowledge of conducting statistical modeling and interpreting results in a public health context (preferred).
  • One (1) or more years of experience with providing written and verbal presentations, including translating complex data findings into actionable insights for diverse audiences (preferred).
