About the role

  • Provide full legal services including advice, counsel, document preparation and review, negotiation and representation of the Bar and/or Boards
  • Provide legal expertise in the areas of contracts, intellectual property, commercial, and human resource law
  • Supervise legal work provided by outside counsel
  • Oversee financial management of division including budget preparation and management and administration of cost recovery activities
  • Oversee board operations and serve as primary legal advisor to the Board of Governors
  • Serve as liaison and general counsel to the Client Protection Fund
  • Participate as a member of the Bar’s Senior Leadership Team
  • Staff liaison for Rules Committee; assist and advise Rules Committee and oversee preparation and filing of rules petitions
  • Oversee and represent the SBA in conservator actions executed under the Supreme Court Rules
  • Oversee internal investigations related to compliance and assist in resolution of issues
  • Hire, train, develop and appraise staff in coordination and consultation with Human Resources
  • Support continuing legal education (CLE) programs and other member services activities as needed
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • J.D. required
  • Member of SBA in good standing
  • Minimum of ten (10) years successful practical legal experience, including litigation/trial experience preferred
  • Five (5) plus (+) years’ experience at a senior management-level preferred
  • Political or legislative experience preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of the Rules of Professional Conduct and Supreme Court rules
  • Proven skills as a supervisor and mentor to organize, lead, manage, and evaluate staff
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Experience in formulating, administering and monitoring budgets
  • General knowledge of labor and employment law desirable
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, Supreme Court, legislation, members, and the public
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations; demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy
  • Strong attention to detail and well organized
  • Flexibility in schedule to meet business needs; additional hours including weekends may be required
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work independently and with teams
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Windows environment with Office Suite; ability to use tools for video conferencing
  • Position may require travel within Arizona; reliable transportation required and if using personal vehicle must have driver’s license and appropriate insurance coverage
