About the role

  • Lead Rule of Law lane of work and proactively strategize for expansion of existing or proposal of new projects; oversee several simultaneous large projects using mostly internal resources and limited assistance from outside counsel.
  • Demonstrate ownership of client relationships; develop, manage, and maintain high-quality relationships with clients and partners, and provide regular updates to the SVP of Legal and other States United executives.
  • Collaborate with Strategy & Partnership and States United executives to meet with potential states and local partners and clients.
  • Proactively assist existing clients with identifying ways to use States United’s services and provide advice on other legal and non-legal services.
  • Perform strategic planning and prioritization of work within the lane of work; collaborate with other lanes and departments to ensure cohesion.
  • Manage and digest significant flow of information from multiple sources to drive actionable insights and decisions within and across lanes and functions.
  • Partner with Development team to present States United’s work to current and prospective donors and assist with drafting proposals.
  • Perform management duties such as identifying and addressing staffing needs, coaching, developing, and mentoring staff, conducting regular check-ins with direct reports, and addressing and documenting performance or conduct concerns in a timely manner, in partnership with the People team as appropriate.
  • Maintain awareness of other organizations and opportunities to both collaborate with and differentiate from others in the democracy space.
  • Positively and meaningfully represent States United in the democracy space to ensure alignment and coordination with other organizations on key projects.
  • On occasion, provide media interviews and appearances on behalf of States United.

Requirements

  • Attorney/JD with an active license and a minimum of 12 years of post-law school experience and 8 years of litigation experience.
  • Significant experience working in or with an office of a state official, including governors or attorneys general.
  • Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing complex subject matter and issues.
  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership, organization, interpersonal, and relationship management skills.
  • Experience managing, developing, and mentoring attorneys and managing programs and staff.
  • Experience managing teams of attorneys and coordinating with internal and external legal teams.
  • Effective negotiation skills and ability to maintain effective relationships at executive levels.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work beyond the normal workday, on weekends, and/or more than 40 hours a week as necessary.
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 15% travel time.
  • Outstanding judgment about both case/legal issues and management/organizational issues.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills, including drafting and editing complex briefs and legal analysis.
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening ability.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience working on or familiarity with issues related to elections, voting, and state government.
