About the role

  • Responsible for valuation and loss prevention inspection of highly valued residential, commercial, industrial, manufacturing, municipal, and institutional risks
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on replacement cost methods, construction costs, and loss prevention issues or hazards to other employees, external customers, and brokers
  • Conduct on-site education field trips for underwriting and adjusting staff
  • Ensure accuracy of valuation system(s) through the collection and analysis of loss prevention and GRC valuation data
  • Conduct loss prevention inspections and valuations for commercial, municipal or institutional risk to establish guaranteed replacement cost building values inclusive of blueprint interpretation
  • Conduct valuations for residential risks to establish a value for Home Owners GRC coverage
  • Inspect building construction, mechanical/electrical systems, and occupancy specific hazards to ensure to national, provincial and/or local building and fire code conformance
  • Evaluate and report on construction, condition, and the potential moral and/or physical hazards associated with risks to determine insurability
  • Identify and make recommendations for risk improvement and/or loss hazard reduction, prevention, and elimination
  • Create loss prevention reports, guaranteed replacement cost worksheets, highly valued home reports, risk evaluation letters, and positive feedback letters
  • Consult with customers and governing agencies to complete research to determine risk hazards and to establish valuation amounts
  • Maintain Risk Evaluators policy and procedure guide
  • Manage development of own fieldwork travel ensuring efficiency and cost-effective scheduling
  • Create loss prevention and risk assessment material for internal staff, broker partners, and customer use
  • Conduct on-site staff field trips for construction, risk, hazard, and loss prevention education component
  • Provide commercial and personal lines underwriting staff guidance and support for review or drafting of Commercial Express valuations and 3rd Party Vendor RCT reports
  • Assist in development and maintenance of National 3rd party vendor inspection program including hazard identification and report content
  • Assist in development and maintenance of inspection criteria guidelines

Requirements

  • Two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant Trades field of study (e.g., construction)
  • A valid driver’s licence
  • 3 - 5 years job-related experience in building construction, inspection or estimating
  • Advanced knowledge of Residential/Commercial/Industrial/Institutional Building Valuation Methods
  • Advanced knowledge of loss prevention inspection and hazard methods including theories and their effect on the insurability of risks
  • Advanced knowledge of national, provincial, and/or local regulations, codes, and building by-laws
  • Advanced knowledge of building construction and materials, plant equipment, mechanical equipment, electrical equipment and wiring, the transport and storage of toxic chemicals, high-hazard or prohibitive atmosphere
  • Advanced skill in reading blueprints
  • Advanced skill in the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software
  • Advanced skill in the use of valuation programs
  • Proficient knowledge and skill to interpret and transfer data from outsourced vendor reports and valuations
  • Fundamental knowledge of insurance theory, principals, and practices
