About the role
- Provide first-line technical support to customers via our support portal, helping troubleshoot Home Assistant configurations, integrations, and automation issues
- Write, update, and maintain Home Assistant addons and custom components to extend functionality for our customers
- Design and implement Home Assistant automations and scripts to solve common customer use cases and improve system reliability
- Create clear, comprehensive documentation and knowledge base articles to help customers and installers solve problems independently
- Monitor customer Home Assistant instances for issues, proactively identifying and resolving problems before they impact the customer experience
- Debug complex home automation setups remotely, working with various devices, protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, etc.), and integrations
- Work closely with the engineering team to report bugs, suggest product improvements, and contribute to our deployment automation
- Test new Home Assistant releases, addons, and integrations before deploying to customer systems
Requirements
- Deep hands-on experience with Home Assistant (configuration, integrations, automations, YAML)
- Proven experience running homelabs or self-hosted infrastructure
- Strong Python programming skills for writing and debugging custom components
- Proficiency with Git for version control and collaboration
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for customer interactions
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to debug complex technical issues independently
- Comfortable working asynchronously in a remote environment
- Nice to Have:
- Contributor to the Home Assistant project
- Active contributor to Home Assistant community forums (https://community.home-assistant.io/)
- Experience with GitLab (CI/CD pipelines, issue tracking, wiki management)
- Familiarity with home automation protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, MQTT)
- Experience with Linux system administration and networking
- Previous customer support or technical writing experience
- Contributions to open-source projects, particularly Home Assistant
- Experience with infrastructure automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Docker)
