About the role

  • Develop and implement engineering initiatives to further Sanofi’s safety culture and reduce plant operational risk.
  • Perform analyses to identify trends in process safety incidents attributed to engineering root causes.
  • Identify plant safety incidents/risks amenable to engineering solutions and develop corrective actions/technical solutions.
  • Interpret and report process safety trends and KPIs to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Establish data-driven priorities for engineering HSE initiatives and cooperate with global HSE to implement improvements.
  • Provide direct site support for serious safety investigations, regulatory inspections, and internal audits.
  • Disseminate lessons learned from operational safety incidents across the manufacturing network and publicize safety best practices.
  • Recommend appropriate technologies and implement modern digital solutions (electronic workflows, automation, dashboards, AI) for process safety.
  • Serve as SME to support process improvements, design reviews, change controls, emergency preparedness, and high-impact events (e.g., plant shutdowns).
  • Participate in risk assessment and mitigation exercises including HAZOPs and JHAs.
  • Lead development and global implementation of the Process Safety Management (PSM) standard and oversee compliance, monitoring, and continuous improvement via audits and dashboards.
  • Collaborate with Global Engineering functional leads to address safety issues in maintenance, facilities, utilities, and sustainability.
  • Develop and implement management strategy for equipment in explosion-rated areas and prepare certification conformities for authorities.
  • With Global HSE, develop an effective end-to-end process for HAZOP.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental / Science / Engineering / Technical discipline or relevant field.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience with safety programs (basic requirement).
  • Preferred: Master's degree in related field and 10+ years of relevant experience managing/leading safety programs at site or global level.
  • Experience in a global or multi-site role is desired.
  • Understanding of unique hazards in pharmaceutical manufacturing (chemical exposure, biohazards, steam, acids/caustics, cleaning agents, cryogenics).
  • First-hand knowledge of safety permit systems (Permit to Work, confined space, hot work, working at height, energy isolation, LOTO).
  • Knowledge of process safety regulations applicable to pharmaceutical systems (arc flash, fire protection, machine guarding, biosafety containment, mechanical integrity).
  • Knowledge of PPE and engineering controls for pharmaceutical manufacturing and support operations.
  • Understanding of environmental permitting and reporting (airborne emissions, spills, containment, wastewater).
  • Experience interfacing with regulatory authorities and internal auditors on HSE matters.
  • Familiarity with operational safety metrics and KPIs.
  • Experience with digital HSE platforms such as Enablon or Intelex.
  • Relevant safety management certifications (to demonstrate currency and continuous learning).
  • In-depth knowledge of domestic safety laws and understanding of international application.
  • Knowledge of contractor pre-qualification systems (e.g., ISN).
  • Understanding of high-hazard chemical API manufacturing, including ATEX zones, organic solvents, explosive powders.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate global cultural differences and establish HSE compliance.
  • Strong leadership, stakeholder management, cross-functional collaboration, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to create business cases, perform data analytics, prioritize initiatives, and interpret/communicate safety findings to senior leaders.
  • Experience facilitating investigations, root cause analysis, and developing CAPAs.
  • Ability to organize communities of practice (CoPs) and deliver engineering-specific safety training.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment methods (HAZOPs, JHAs) and lean/continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Flexibility to support a worldwide manufacturing network across timezones, languages, cultures, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in French beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Willingness to travel ~15-20% domestic and international.
