About the role

  • Monitor significant developments in media law
  • Assist staff attorneys responding to legal defense requests from reporters
  • Prepare legal memoranda, litigation materials, and friend-of-the-court (amicus) briefs
  • Handle special projects and write content for RCFP website and other publications
  • Participate in state and federal trial and appellate litigation, including filing open records requests, motion practice, discovery, brief writing, and hearing/oral argument preparation
  • Contribute to amicus and policy work and assist in responding to journalists' legal inquiries

Requirements

  • J.D. from accredited law school
  • Must be admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction or awaiting bar exam results/admission at start of employment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Good judgment and the highest level of professional integrity
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States (RCFP does not sponsor work visas)
  • Post-law school judicial clerkship, fellowship, and/or litigation experience strongly preferred for Media Litigation Fellowship
