About the role
- Prepare and review designs for advanced rail-transit electrification projects.
- Evaluate engineering designs prepared by outside consultants for accuracy and compliance.
- Provide technical expertise to internal departments and construction personnel.
- Conduct field inspections to support engineering decisions and ensure constructability.
- Assist in the development and implementation of updated electrical standards.
- Track and report on project status, including budgeting, forecasting, and scheduling.
- Perform field audits to ensure compliance with established engineering practices and policies.
- Perform detailed engineering design reviews and quality assurance on assigned projects.
Requirements
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience/education)
- 5+ years of experience in railroad electric traction systems, including substation design, frequency converters, protection relays, and high-voltage circuit breakers and transformers
- Skilled in the design, operation, and maintenance of traction power or utility substations
- Strong knowledge of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems and related equipment
- Proficient in reading, interpreting, and producing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings for substation protection and control systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD design software
- Familiar with CAD software such Bentley/MicroStation, REVIT, SolidWorks, or similar platforms
- Experience with logic programming (e.g., PLCs and microprocessor relays)
- Familiarity with project management and design workflow tools, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Procore
- Ability to perform and direct troubleshooting of substation equipment and control systems
- Strong technical writing ability for reports, documentation, and design records
- Experience with CTDOT, Metro-North, Amtrak, MBTA, and knowledge of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor in NYC
- Familiar with design-build projects
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team
- Highly organized with strong time management capabilities
- Physically able to navigate construction sites (standing, climbing, stooping, crouching)
- Willingness to work outdoors and conduct field surveys
- Comfortable in all weather conditions and high-noise environments
- Recommended certifications: Amtrak Track Training, CSX Track Training, MTA Track Training, OSHA 30
