About the role

  • Report directly to the CEO to help develop and execute Pirate Ship’s legal strategy, aligning it with the company’s overall objectives while advising C-Suite, HR, Product, Finance, and other business groups on legal matters and ensuring compliance across the crew.
  • Advise C-Suite on governance best practices, ensure compliance with internal policies and fiduciary duties, and support the development and maintenance of governance frameworks that align with the company’s strategic objectives.
  • Oversee both domestic and international regulatory compliance and risk management by ensuring Pirate Ship remains fully compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, particularly with respect to Germany, including assisting in compliance activities and managing regulatory interactions when needed.
  • Monitor legal developments such as GDPR and CCPA, and lead privacy compliance efforts.
  • Craft operational procedures and protocols related to privacy, data protection and cybersecurity including meeting the standards of ISO 27001 and SOC II.
  • Represent the company when meeting with regulators and government officials, oversee legal disputes and managing litigation, engaging with outside counsel as necessary.
  • Conduct risk assessments, identify potential legal concerns, and develop strategies to mitigate risk proactively across the organization.
  • Oversee the drafting, review, and negotiation of all contracts, ensuring Pirate Ship’s interests are safeguarded in all agreements with vendors, partners, and employees.
  • Draft and negotiate proposals for outside counsel and litigation partners/vendors.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing legal team, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Work remotely and be available for in-person meetings multiple times per year at varied locations.
  • Available for in-person meetings multiple times per year and willing to work from home using company provided equipment.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience with a substantial portion in a corporate environment, ideally within the technology or finance industries.
  • 5+ years of experience in senior legal roles managing legal teams and experience in advising and guiding executive leadership and multiple business groups.
  • Experience with international regulations through familiarity with international issues, ensuring compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Crisis management experience with expertise in handling legal crises, managing high-stakes legal disputes, or navigating regulatory investigations.
  • Strong data privacy & security expertise with a strong understanding of global data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
  • JD from an accredited law school and bar membership in good standing.
  • Ability to handle complex legal issues in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional legal research and drafting skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Preferred: ability to speak like a pirate; Certifications including: CIPP/US, CIPM, & CISM.
