About the role

  • Join OpenAI’s Consumer Products team to develop, validate, and scale advanced display modules
  • Own display component and system-level metrology and act as the primary technical interface to suppliers
  • Coordinate across optical, electrical, mechanical, and panel design disciplines to take displays from concept through production
  • Develop and utilize advanced metrology tools to measure and assess display performance
  • Lead characterization and precision measurement of display, focusing on key performance metrics
  • Manage and oversee display test operations, including test plan execution, lab workflows, and test data pipelines
  • Develop display module specifications in collaboration with internal and external partners
  • Lead cross-functional technical efforts spanning optical, electrical, mechanical, process and panel design specialists
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for display suppliers and manage supplier engineering activities
  • Characterize both device and full-module display performance to drive continuous improvement and innovation
  • Optimize display quality by ensuring color accuracy, brightness uniformity, and other imaging performance goals
  • Hands-on characterization of electro-optical performance, data analysis and image processing, and scripting for lab-level measurement automation
  • Run and coordinate failure analysis with vendors and internal teams; identify root causes and drive corrective actions
  • Review and validate vendor test data and system integration results to ensure spec compliance
  • Identify, prioritize, document, and drive closure of engineering issues to meet program timelines
  • Support engineering builds and initial mass production: resolve ramp issues, handle field returns related to displays, and qualify solutions for production
  • Prepare technical documentation and presentations for program reviews
  • Typical day: benchtop electro-optical measurements, building/adapting metrology setups and automating measurement sequences, statistical analysis of test results, and coordinating failure investigations with suppliers

Requirements

  • MS in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Minimum 5 years relevant industry experience
  • Hands-on experience with benchtop and industry-standard optical measurement systems (characterization, test, validation)
  • Technical experience in one or more of: optical design/characterization, human visual/optical physics, semiconductor optoelectronics, display technologies, optical sensors, or circuits
  • Experience with programming for data acquisition and lab automation (e.g., Python, LabVIEW)
  • Experience with statistical analysis tools (JMP, MATLAB) and/or optical simulation tools (e.g., LightTools)
  • PhD degree in a relevant discipline (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience connecting optical device performance to process outcomes through failure analysis (preferred)
  • Prior experience with module engineering and mass production processes (preferred)
  • Deep knowledge of display-specific optics and metrology best practices (preferred)
  • Experience leading and scaling test operations and lab infrastructure (preferred)
  • Strong project management, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills (preferred)
  • Able to work from our US office three days per week
  • Willingness to travel internationally to supplier sites and partners as required
