About the role
- Assists Licensed Genetic Counselors with direct and indirect patient care
- Supports the genetic testing processes of the department
- Reviews and obtains medical records
- Collects and processes personal and family medical histories
- Prepares test kits and requisitions
- Packages lab specimens
- Communicates with genetic testing laboratories about patient samples
- Tracks genetic tests and results
- Identifies patient resources for genetic diseases
- Obtains patient cost estimates and prior authorizations for testing
- Communicates results to the patient with clear documentation in the EMR
- Attends and participates in hospital or system-wide meetings
Requirements
- Associate's Degree: Life Sciences
- Background in life sciences with focus on genetics
- Basic understanding of inheritance patterns, chromosomes, genes, genetic variant nomenclature, and the metric system
- Vitals training and BLS certification preferred.
