About the role

  • Assists Licensed Genetic Counselors with direct and indirect patient care
  • Supports the genetic testing processes of the department
  • Reviews and obtains medical records
  • Collects and processes personal and family medical histories
  • Prepares test kits and requisitions
  • Packages lab specimens
  • Communicates with genetic testing laboratories about patient samples
  • Tracks genetic tests and results
  • Identifies patient resources for genetic diseases
  • Obtains patient cost estimates and prior authorizations for testing
  • Communicates results to the patient with clear documentation in the EMR
  • Attends and participates in hospital or system-wide meetings

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree: Life Sciences
  • Background in life sciences with focus on genetics
  • Basic understanding of inheritance patterns, chromosomes, genes, genetic variant nomenclature, and the metric system
  • Vitals training and BLS certification preferred.
