About the role
- Planning, operation and continuous development of the institute’s campus network (LAN, Wi‑Fi/WLAN, WAN, VPN, IPv4/IPv6)
- Administration of network infrastructure (switches, routers, firewalls)
- Designing secure and scalable network architectures for scientific computing and data-intensive research workflows
- Supporting the infrastructure for research data management (archiving and network access)
- Monitoring and optimizing network performance, availability and security
- Implementing automation and Infrastructure-as-Code solutions for deployment and configuration of network-related systems
- Maintaining and improving system monitoring and network observability
- Collaborating with researchers to plan network-related infrastructure solutions for specialized research projects
- Participating in the modernization of the institute’s IT infrastructure and security architecture
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a comparable qualification
- Strong affinity for open-source technologies and the open-source community
- Solid experience in enterprise networking (Layer 2/Layer 3, VLANs, VPNs)
- Deep understanding of network topologies and protocols
- Experience administering network components such as switches, routers and firewalls
- Strong experience in Linux system administration (Debian/Ubuntu/RHEL)
- Experience with monitoring tools (e.g. Icinga, Nagios or similar)
- Experience with automation and configuration management (e.g. Ansible, Salt)
- Scripting skills (Bash, Python or similar)
- Experience with the version control system Git
- Thorough understanding of secure and scalable IT infrastructures
- Excellent communication skills in German and English
- Proactive, solution-oriented working style and the ability to work effectively both in a team and independently
- Willingness to continuously update and develop one’s knowledge and skills
- Advantageous: experience planning and deploying enterprise network infrastructures from scratch, including physical cabling, switching and wireless
- Experience with virtualization platforms (e.g. Proxmox or similar)
- Experience with container technologies
- Experience with CI/CD systems and development workflows
- Experience with IT project management tools (e.g. Redmine)
- Experience supporting scientific computing environments or research infrastructures
