Full-stack Engineer

• Serve as subject matter expert in Java development and software engineering practices for the Benefits Discovery Service (BDS)
• Build and maintain scalable, secure, and resilient cloud-native applications
• Design, develop, and maintain backend services in Java (Javalin, Maven) with containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS)
• Implement and optimize RESTful APIs to integrate BDS with VA.gov and other enterprise systems
• Leverage DataDog for monitoring, observability, and performance optimization
• Build and support CI/CD pipelines that align with VA’s DevSecOps compliance and deployment requirements
• Ensure all development meets VA security, compliance, and accessibility standards
• Collaborate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies (planning, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives)
• Maintain a high-level understanding of adjacent systems to ensure interoperability across VA environments
• Lead troubleshooting and incident resolution in production and non-production environments
• Actively mentor junior engineers and foster a collaborative engineering culture
• Communicate complex technical issues and system developments effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Champion secure software development best practices, peer review processes, and high-quality documentation
